A DEBATE WITH SELF

The second half of January started off with a bang. We had a nice sunny day so I headed off to Boundary Bay to see if I could locate the Red Knot, Willet, and Pacific Golden Plover that had been reported here. I walked up onto the dyke and into a group of 8 or so birders, all with their scopes pointed at the mudflats.  Almost immediately,  one mentioned that she had the Red Knot in her scope, “ just down and to the right of that log”, and another said he had the Plover “ on the right side of that clump of seaweed with all the Black Bellied Plovers”. So within a minute or so I had good looks at both these birds.  This got me to thinking, Is this really fair to get these birds so easily ? How hard did I really work to get these birds?  I simply walked up and had the birds basically handed to me.   On the other hand, isn’t this a great example of people willingly sharing their time and expertise?

Since no matter what we do or accomplish, we walk on the shoulders of giants, I’ll brush that uneasy feeling aside and carry on with the benefit of the groundwork laid by others.

Anyhow, back to birding, after a couple hours here I never did get the Willet so I headed off to Ladner Harbour Park. Again, I was using the work of others. In this case, Melissa Hafting’s’ “Rare Bird Alert” led me to think I could get a 3 J day. It actually within15 minutes of arriving I had found a Stellar’s Jay, Bluejay, and California Scrub Jay.

I had time for one more stop,so I headed to Iona Beach park. My plan was to bird the inner ponds, but as I arrived i figured I’d check Melissa’s RBA and a few minutes earlier a Ruddy Turnstone had been spotted at the end of the south jetty.  I grabbed my binoculars, camera and scope, and hustled the 4 km. out to the end of the jetty.  As I arrived, I saw Peter L. crouched down with his camera. What perfect timing ! I had a few minutes for some good looks and a couple of shots before it flew off and we couldn’t relocate it.

I ended up this day with 111 birds on the year.
